Fishing for Answers

Like an old trusted lover who longs for another

Like a battle torn soldier who has lost a brave brother

Like a new born wolf pup adrift with no mother

Like a once bright flame lingering and smothered

Like the northwest wind without a swaying tree

Like a caged wild lion who wants to be free

Like a brightly colored parachute without gravity

Like lonely smiles and laughter having no glee

Missing are pieces, missing for all

missing for reasons, for big or for small

Cradling strange feelings, answers are sought

Fishing for answers, most never caught

Like a giant yellow sun that never seems to set

Like a once loved friend who seems to forget

Like an abuser of children who has no regret

Like a quiet puppeteer without her marionette

Like a blue gray ocean without a rising tide

Like two ultra magnetic forces about to collide

Like a groom at the alter having no bride

Like a grief ridden widow who never has cried

Missing are pieces, missing for all

missing for reasons, for big or for small

Cradling strange feelings, answers are sought

Fishing for answers, most never caught

Like a wild running river without any bends

Like a tornado wreaking havoc never making amends

Like the iron rail drifter without any friends

Like seldom traveled roads without any ends

Like a grandfather’s pocket watch never to be wound

Like the second royal brother never to be crowned

Like the fallen autumn leaf without any ground

Like the age old question whose answer’s never found

Missing are pieces, missing for all

missing for reasons, for big or for small

Cradling strange feelings, answers are sought

Fishing for answers, most never caught

A really good poem, and such a sad one. It makes me feel like the way I feel when I haven’t been out visiting nature in awhile. Now I have the urge to get out in the next day or so even though it’s been cold around here. So it actually is having a positive effect on me.

Thank you. Our interaction with the planet is a mystery. Often I can find no rational explanations for the outcome of events. That it should remain a mystery, at least to some of us, is part of what makes life worth living.

Bill, your poem is lovely in a sweet sad way and your reading is very good. I would have liked to hear the song, as well … there are always one or two unanswwered questions that arise from time to time and remain unanswered. I suppose the key is to let them remain in peace, and it’s okay not to have answers.

Not having answers, I think, is what keeps us asking questions. And until we know it all, as if we ever will, asking questions is how we will continue to grow, understand, and learn to live with the planet. Nice to hear from you.
