A nice post that reminds me of my youth. Even though I mostly grew up in the city, I have had an odd life that is rooted in the country. I have lived with wood stoves and things like that for a lot of that time. Most city people scoff at that, but that's just the way my dad, who grew up on a farm, liked things. Plus it saves a lot of money, but not a whole lot of work. I prefer the easier life of gas furnaces, but I know that I could do without them.

Excellent post! Your feeling about being in the forest or any place like that is very much the same as mine. It took me years to discover it, but the forest is the only place I can go to feel at such peace.

I don't know about anyone else, but my place, not so different from yours, is the same to me. You wrote about it so beautifully, expressing your thoughts so much better than the words I could put down. But, here I was nodding yes, as I read your post. This is a keeper, Bill.

This is the kind of experience I'd like to have, and the kind of people I like. It reminds me of the times I was able to visit my grandma's farm. So much different than living in the city.

Sounds like the kind of place I would love. I've been to many small towns. A city is fine, but they just can't match the feel that a smaller place brings. I love looking at pictures from the past in those places bring. Being out in the forest by myself is always good, but I've only ever been able to do that around here where civilization is never far away. I fantasize about being at a place like you describe. I wonder if I would be able to do it. Maybe I'll get to one day and my smaller adventures are all preparation.

You make me feel as if I am right there with you in this one. I've always been told before how relaxing fishing is, but I've never been able to experience it for myself. Your story this time goes a long way to help me understand it more. I've often compared it with the relaxation my hiking gives me, and now I'm sure it is the same great feeling.

Hi Sandy

There is no building allowed because all of the surrounding land is owned by TransCanada a large hydroelectric company. The land was originally conserved by New England Power Company. Every so often Mount Snow tries to buy water rights for Somerset Reservoir for snow making but the opposition has been stiff (and should be).

Bears are very common here. We have seen 4 or 5 in our yard this summer. Keep and eye out and eventually you'll see one too!

Wow, it is hard to believe there is that kind of wilderness left. Are building prohibited there, or is it just that remote? Sounds like you had a wonderful day. One that made memories for the rest of your life.

You know, I have been in Maine 40 years, and have never seen a live bear. Lots of hanging ones at the sporting camps in Jackman, but never one in the wild. I hope before I leave Maine I do get the chance.

As usual, this was a great post.

It looks like you have another fishing partner for a long time. I sometimes wish I had somebody around to help me learn to enjoy fishing. My hiking is good enough for me though.

Hi Sandy

Yes, my two sons and I went fishing at Lac Wetetnagami in early July. Their first trip to those parts, and they loved the wilderness. Surprisingly, Liam, my youngest son developed quite a knack for cooking walleye, and so, held his own in that department.

To Ratty and Sandy: Ravens are wonderful birds. They are beyond smart, and do the most amazing things. They are fascinating to study and learn about. Just when you think you've seen everything they can do they come up with some new activity or antic that is way outside of your expectations. They are just amazing.
